Lisbon is the second cheapest European city for a getaway, but there is another capital in Europe with plenty to discover at an even more affordable price. Have you been there?
After the summer holidays, which usually take up more than half of our free time, the need arises for short, quick and affordable breaks. While staying in the country and exploring it is a great option, for some, “going abroad is the best option”. And the truth is that a weekend stay can be enough to get to know a European city or town. You just need to know how to choose — and we can help here.
Yes, Europe has a diversity of countries and cultures that makes the decision-making process far from easy. But it is at these times that we recommend opting for those underrated urban destinations. Vilnius is one of them. Why? We explain.
“This isn’t the first time the fascinating city has topped the rankings, although it lost out to Lisbon in 2023. More affordable options for a city break include Lille in France, Krakow in Poland and Riga in Latvia,” it reads. According to the barometer, a two-night trip to Vilnius for two people costs around €283. This includes a range of drinks, a dinner for two with a bottle of house wine, two nights in three-star accommodation, sightseeing tours and transport around the city.
There is no doubt that this is a good option for those who want to travel on a budget. After analyzing the data, it was found that Vilnius cost 10% less than Lisbon, the second-placed city in the ranking, and less than half the cost of the other 18 cities represented on the list.

A Igreja de Santa Ana, a Porta da Aurora, o Museu Nacional da Lituânia e o Museu das Ilusões são também pontos a não perder. O mesmo acontece com o Parque Bernardine, ou Trakai, famoso por ter um castelo no meio de um lago (fica a 30 minutos de Vilnius).
À noite, passeie pelo bairro artístico e alternativo de Uzupis, conhecido pela sua "República Independente", com a própria constituição e ambiente boémio. Aproveite para jantar num dos cafés ou restaurantes acolhedores da área. Sugerimos que experimente pratos como cepelinai e kugelis.
Portugal também é referido
Portugal continua a destacar-se internacionalmente. Lisboa é a segunda cidade mais barata para visitar numa escapadinha, sendo, aliás, o destino com melhor custo-benefício na Europa Ocidental.
“Apesar de um aumento de 26% no custo médio de acomodações de três estrelas, os preços continuam bons para refeições, bebidas e outras comodidades turísticas”, nota a publicação. Mas a capital portuguesa não foi a única a ser mencionada.
Braga foi considerado, pela Condé Nast Traveller, o melhor destino para uma espadela discreta. Já o Porto destaca-se por ser a melhor opção para quem quer “bebericar ao sol”.
