Living Under the Sea? Company will Launch Underwater Residences in 2027
The project, unusual to say the least, aims to create a type of submersible habitat, with rooms, showers and toilets, for people to live and work at the bottom of the ocean.
Have you ever imagined living under the sea? Well then… the technology and ocean exploration company DEEP aims to create, by 2027, a habitat of submersible homes for civilians and researchers to explore the world underwater. And they guarantee that the system is safe, efficient and economical! See the details here.
What will underwater housing look like?
The project, called Sentinel, is a fully integrated modular system for underwater housing that offers individual spaces with bedrooms, toilets, work spaces, social and dining areas, and even research rooms. The Sentinel can be positioned at a depth of up to 200 metres. People will be able to remain underwater for periods of up to 28 days at a time.
Spaces will be customisable and flexible, where people can live, work and thrive. Sean Wolpert, president of DEEP, said in conversation with Forbes: “We want to bring Humanity back to the ocean. It’s about raising awareness and highlighting the importance of the ocean, which is the heart and lungs of our planet, responsible for the oxygen in at least every two breaths we take.
The rooms will be private, one for each crew member, with ample space and large windows; a person 6 feet tall can sleep comfortably in it. The bathrooms will have two spaces, with a private changing area, toilet, shower and closets; and laundry facilities will also be provided.
The kitchens will be fully equipped with counters, sinks, refrigerators, vacuum sealing machine, hot water tap and space to store utensils. It will also offer ample space for food storage, preparation and cooking.
It will also have a mezzanine area, which will be a flexible workspace. Scientists will be able to use it as a laboratory, while teachers, for example, can create a more traditional computer workstation setup. And when will the work begin? Wolpert expects the company to obtain the necessary approvals this year, and to begin construction work by the end of the year. The first Sentinel system will be deployed in a large submerged limestone quarry in the west of England. The first deep sea test is expected to be carried out by the end of 2026.
However, the opportunity to live underwater will be for few rich people. “People who want to go through this process and become able to operate in this habitat may be those with ultra-high net worth,” Wolpert said. “Just think about companies like SpaceX and Blue Origin, which are sending super rich people into space”, he concluded. See below the video demonstrating what it will be like to live at the bottom of the ocean:
With the Sentinel system, a whole new world of living and working underwater is possible. The ability to explore the unknown depths of the ocean will offer researchers the opportunity to closely observe and understand the mysteries of marine ecosystems.
